“Genetic Fingerprints” Developed For Arabica Coffee Varieties

In the U.S., coffee contributes roughly $225 billion annually to our economy with Arabica coffee accounting for roughly 60% of the commercial coffee market. Unfortunately, Arabica coffee crops worldwide have a narrow genetic background, leaving them susceptible to diseases, pests, and climate change conditions. ARS researchers have developed a DNA fingerprinting panel which can be used to preserve genetic resources.
