ARS Collection Reaches a Milestone

Main Content

The semen sample from a breed of domestic pig called the “Duroc boar,” received this spring at the Agricultural Research Service's National Animal Germplasm Collection in Fort Collins, Colorado, was the one millionth sample of animal germplasm to arrive at the facility. The largest of its kind in the world, the ARS collection is designed to ensure there is enough genetic diversity available for breeders to meet the changing needs of farmers and ranchers—and consumers. Such a diverse collection of genetic stock allows breeders to address the potential threats posed by emerging diseases, invasive pests, and other problems.
